how seasons allow us to experience all that we think we know in different ways. Some time ago I sought quiet, thoughtful spaces around Grant County like off-trail basalt cliffs near Coulee City, galleries like the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, and glasses of wine at Cave B Winery. These days, my wild little family would not fit in these spaces in the same, quiet way. We find ourselves at playgrounds near beaches throughout Sun Lakes, face painting tents at (all of the) community festivals, and local restaurants with french fries and corner booths.
It’s a gift to be in the same place for so long and still have so much to learn. I hope the stories and advertisements in this magazine give you ideas for how to participate in our active and amazing region in new ways. This edition covers the next four months, from Spring Break, Easter and Mothers’ Day, through Father’s Day and Flag Day to Fourth of July! There are dozens of events in these pages… plus so many more we missed. If you know any events, organizations or businesses that should be included in these pages, please send them our way! My goal with this magazine is to support Grant County (and neighboring) businesses and their owners – they are what makes our region such a livable and loveable place to be.
From the Alondra’s friendly service at Ollie Tattoo Studio in Quincy, to the art by John Rankin in Ritzville and the stories written by Matthew Sullivan about Soap Lake… threads that connect us all are the appreciation for small town vibes, close relationships and the gorgeous natural backdrops that frame our lives. Alondra, a lifetime resident of the area said she loves watching not just her own business grow, but also the successful ventures by other young people she grew up with. John believes in the power of hard work and lending a hand, and stops just short of outright challenging folks to go volunteer somewhere. Matthew has done deep thinking about the relationships inherent in our small communities, and appreciates the complexity and richness present here.
Working on this magazine, writing these stories and building this team is immensely rewarding and incredibly inspiring! Our next edition comes out in July, just in time to get folks ready for the Rodeo and celebrate the agricultural aspects of our region. Please write in and let me know how you think we’re doing. I love to hear from you, especially your ideas!
Until next time – all the best, Shawn Cardwell
